Cross-company evidence brief ยท 03

A disclosed number is only as useful as its requisition

Pay transparency in this set is not a simple company ranking. Some employers reveal local pay on result cards, some publish a range only inside a detail page or apply flow, and others provide broad workforce averages alongside role-specific terms. The unit of comparison must remain the job, location, level, and pay basis.

Research question

Can the displayed number be tied to this job, location, level, and pay basis?

Walmart can surface pay, shift, and location before the detail click, while Apple binds pay to a Role Number and sometimes states where new hires tend to start inside the range. TJX samples show the same title at different local rates. Costco and many sampled Lowe's pages leave the applicant with an unresolved pay question at discovery. Taco Bell's local operator and location change how a posted number should be read. A national average, maximum range, differential, bonus, or total-compensation figure answers a different question from starting base pay.

Applicant rule

Capture base range, hourly or annual basis, location, shift differential, bonus or equity treatment, employment type, and date viewed. Do not turn one local sample into a brand-wide wage or count a range maximum as the likely offer.

Selected evidence cases

How five retained postings change the meaning of a pay number

These examples contrast result-card disclosure, requisition-specific ranges, local rate changes, missing discovery-page pay, and Operator-specific terms. Each evidence date anchors a disclosure that may change; none of the numbers should be detached from its role and location.

Walmart

result-card pay and shift evidence

Fixed-report state: Documented

Result cards exposed facility type, location, shift, and pay before a requisition was opened.

Evidence date:

Application system: Walmart Careers portal and Walmart Online Hiring Center for hourly roles

Known limit: Two current requisitions were retained; another role family would broaden the sample.

Apple

Role Number and qualification-specific ranges

Fixed-report state: Documented

Four current retail, technical, corporate, and hardware records exposed role-specific pay and qualification evidence.

Evidence date:

Application system: Apple Jobs with Apple Account profile/sign-in, My Profile, Submit Resume, and a separate location picker for some nationwide retail requisitions

Known limit: The nationwide seasonal card showed a weekly-hours field that requires store-level confirmation.

TJX Companies

same title, different local rates

Fixed-report state: Documented

Eight OPEN posting records showed materially different local starting ranges and role duties.

Evidence date:

Application system: jobs.tjx.com discovery and Talent Community surface; sampled current postings routed Apply to Workday under wd1.myworkdaysite.com/recruiting/tjx/TJX_EXTERNAL

Known limit: The sample covered selected U.S. store and loss-prevention roles observed on one date.

Lowe's

sparse pay disclosure in the sampled set

Fixed-report state: Partial

Eight current records showed that matching titles could expose pay in one location and omit it in another.

Evidence date:

Application system: Lowe's careers portal, with Luci for many store/facility applicants and Workday Candidate Home for most corporate roles

Known limit: Only three of the eight retained records displayed a populated public pay range.

Taco Bell

operator-specific local pay

Fixed-report state: Documented

A current restaurant posting identified its operator, pay, age gate, physical requirements, and local benefits.

Evidence date:

Application system: Taco Bell jobs search, with Apply Now destinations that vary by role, operator, and location

Known limit: One detailed restaurant sample cannot establish another operator's vendor, status path, or schedule.

Applicant worksheet

Normalize pay evidence before ranking two opportunities

Keep base pay, pay basis, range position, premiums, and variable compensation in separate fields. If a current requisition omits pay, record the omission instead of substituting a national average or a different location's range.

  1. 01

    Requisition or Role Number

  2. 02

    Location and work arrangement

  3. 03

Hourly, annual, or other pay basis

  4. 04

    Starting range versus full range

  5. 05

Premium, bonus, equity, or differential kept separate from base pay

Scope and reproducibility

Pay examples test comparability, not employer generosity

The selected disclosures are a qualitative synthesis from existing source registers, not a new wage sample. They cannot support a company pay ranking, an expected offer, or a claim about locations outside the retained requisitions.

The 25-employer/37-posting transparency report and the separate 16-company/58-record published-cohort appendix remain distinct fixed outputs.

A retained pay range is a dated disclosure, not an estimate of the applicant's offer. The current posting and written offer control.
